Hemshech Ayin Beis: an introduction

What it is, when it was said, how it is built, and how this series will run

The longest series of maamarim in Chassidus, said by the Rebbe Rashab from Shavuos 5672 to Shabbos Vayeira 5676. What it is, how it is built, and why our Rebbe held it so dear.

In this video

  • The name: it opens with the words Besha’ah shehikdimu, and began in 5672 (Ayin Beis).
  • Said from Shavuos 5672 in Lubavitch to Shabbos Vayeira 5676 in Rostov, in four stretches.
  • The count: Hayom Yom counts 144 maamarim; the printed hemshech has 140, then a long written part that was never said.
  • How it began in Menton, and the Frierdiker Rebbe: a new era in spreading Chassidus.
  • The opening Gemara (Shabbos 88a) and the main themes: keser, mesirus nefesh, kabbalas ol, v’yadata hayom.
  • Our Rebbe at the Yud Tes Kislev 5737 farbrengen: “great things and wonders”, the photocopy, and the one-dollar printing.
  • A story: ten hours with open eyes in Vienna.

The first video of the whole Hemshech Ayin Beis, maamar by maamar: what the hemshech is, when and where it was said, how it is built, and what our Rebbe said about it. Sources are listed beside the video.

Not yet verified: why Hayom Yom counts 144 maamarim while the printed text has 140; the themes are summarized from Chabadpedia’s outline of the hemshech; page numbers follow chabadlibrary.org, not checked against a printed copy; some sources name the farbrengen 20 Kislev 5737.

Review questions
  1. When and where was Hemshech Ayin Beis said?
From the first day of Shavuos 5672 in Lubavitch to Shabbos Parshas Vayeira 5676 in Rostov, in four stretches, each beginning on Shavuos.
  2. How many maamarim are in it?
Hayom Yom counts 144. The printed hemshech, as it is numbered today, has 140 dated maamarim, followed by a long written part that was never said and never divided into maamarim.
  3. What are the three meanings of “keser” the hemshech explains?
Waiting and silence, a crown, and something that surrounds; they match the revealed will, the hidden will, and the essence of the will that never comes into revelation.
  4. How did our Rebbe arrange its printing in 5737?
Everyone who wished gave one dollar, no more and no less, for each member of the household, to share in the responsibility; no names were printed, only the number of participants. It was printed for Yud Shevat 5737 in three volumes.
