Oteh Or Kasalmah: wrapped in light
Maamar 2, second night of Shavuos 5672, pp. 8–14
“He wraps Himself in light like a garment; He spreads out the heavens like a curtain.” What do the two halves have to do with each other? The second maamar explains Atzilus: lights, vessels, and Torah as light and garment.
In this video
- Tehillim 104:2 and the question: how the two halves of the verse connect.
- The “form of a man” Yechezkel saw: the ten sefiros, each light in its own vessel.
- The vessels shape the lights, and the lights lead the vessels.
- Why Atzilus exists: so that G-dliness can be known, loved and feared.
- A puzzle: Atzilus is G-dliness revealed, yet beyond comparison. The answer: lights from the kav, vessels from the reshimu; the mashal of the letters of an idea.
- Torah as the intermediary, inner and outer: the light and the garment. A review.
The second maamar of Hemshech Ayin Beis, said on the second night of Shavuos 5672, followed in its own order from the full Hebrew text and the Rebbe Rashab’s kitzurim, with each idea shown in a picture.
“In the mind, even the vessels are almost like light” paraphrases the maamar’s words in ch. 5. Chapter numbers are the hemshech’s continuous numbering; page numbers follow chabadlibrary.org, not checked against a printed copy.

Review questions
- What question does the maamar ask on “Oteh or kasalmah, noteh shamayim kayri’ah”?What the two halves of the verse have to do with each other: wrapping in light like a garment, and spreading the heavens like a curtain.
- How do the lights and vessels of Atzilus affect each other? The vessels shape how the lights act, and since the vessels of Atzilus are batel and fit, the lights shine openly in them and lead them.
- If Atzilus is G-dliness revealed, how is it beyond comparison to the Infinite?Every intermediary has both sides: its lights come from the kav, drawn from the Infinite, and its vessels from the reshimu, the impression in the empty space, the way the words of an idea come through the idea but are not made of it.
- How does the maamar answer the verse?Or, light, is the inner Torah, without limit; salmah, the garment, is the outer Torah, with measure. To spread the heavens, to create the world, there first must be Torah with its light and its garment.
