Shalom Bayis

Making room for Hashem in the home: seven pointers from Chazal and from our Rebbe’s letters.

In this part

  • Hashem allowed the holy Name to be erased for peace between husband and wife (Chullin 141a).
  • Ish and ishah: when they merit it, the Shechinah rests between them (Sotah 17a).
  • Honor, gentle influence, never being “the boss,” and not being pulled into an argument.
  • Saying sorry, a little goodwill between two hard surfaces, and real appreciation.
  • A coin in the pushka every weekday morning.

Review questions
  1. What does Chazal’s teaching about the erasing of Hashem’s Name show?
How precious peace between husband and wife is: Hashem allowed the holy Name to be erased to bring peace between them (Chullin 141a).
  2. What is the lesson of ish and ishah?
The yud of ish and the hei of ishah form Hashem’s Name. When they merit it, the Shechinah rests between them, so shalom bayis means making room for Hashem in the home (Sotah 17a).
  3. What did our Rebbe write about being “the boss”?
Never to be the boss: gentle influence is what works (letter of 13 Tammuz 5725).
  4. What daily practice does this part suggest?
A coin in the pushka each weekday morning, for Hashem’s blessing in the home, and never being the one who starts an argument.
